Kaitlyn O'Shaughnessy

Kaitlyn O’Shaughnessy focuses her practice on humanitarian, employment, and family-based immigration matters before U.S. immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS),  U.S. Consulates abroad, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Prior to joining Alight Legal PLLC, Ms. O’Shaughnessy worked for various immigration law firms in the Washington, DC Metro Area, where she had a robust humanitarian and family-based immigration practice. Ms. O’Shaughnessy has significant experience representing individuals in humanitarian immigration claims, including asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under the convention against torture. She represents, among others, political activists, journalists, those fleeing forced marriage and other forms of gender-based violence, those fleeing gang violence, and members of the LGBTQ community from all over the world. She also represents clients in family-based immigration claims and provides immigration assistance for those with criminal records.

Ms. O’Shaughnessy previously worked for Amnesty International USA, researching gender-based violence and lobbying Congress for legislation protecting migrant women from violence. She continues to be involved with that organization as a women’s human rights specialist and provides technical assistance on immigration and refugee human rights issues.

Ms. O’Shaughnessy earned her law degree at McGill University. She is a member of the New York Bar and is licensed to practice before immigration courts nationwide and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. She is also a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Ms. O’Shaughnessy speaks fluent English, French, and Spanish. She enjoys international travel and has visited over 40 countries.
